Reading Club
The Reading Club was born with the spark of a simple idea – how do we find a way to foster the joy of reading in the next generation?
With that thought, the Reading Club was born.
The goal of the Reading Club is to foster a love of reading and to provide a comfortable, safe space for students to read and discuss what is read with others.
Since the Spring of 2022, volunteers have read with students at McKinna Elementary School in Oxnard.
The Reading Club holds three sessions of approximately eight weeks each throughout the school year. During each session, members volunteer to read with students after school, twice a week, for an hour each day. The school provides space to meet in its library.
Approximately 30 students attend each session. Mainly, students in grades 2 through 4 participate. Each volunteer chooses the books for her group of 4 to 5 students.
While the school provides class sets of books for students reading at a 3rd grade level and above, we discovered that many of the students needed books at lower reading levels. So, the Reading Club built its own library of books for those students.
When the session ends, the reading does not stop. Each participant has the opportunity to choose a non-fiction book and a fiction book to keep and take home.
